History
Nihonmatsu Station opened on 15 December 1887 on what is now the Tōhoku Main Line, 250.3 kilometres from the line's starting point at Tokyo. The present station building was completed in September 1976, and JR East absorbed the station at JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987. The platform layout consists of two opposed side platforms linked to the station building by a footbridge. A Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened in 1974 and operated until 31 October 2021, when it was replaced by a video-assisted reserved-seat ticket machine; station duties had been contracted out in October 2015. The station serves the city of Nihonmatsu in Fukushima Prefecture, and its building — shaped after Nihonmatsu Castle in keeping with the old castle town — is one of the selected Hundred Stations of Tōhoku.
