History

Narai Station opened on 1 December 1909 with the extension of the state-owned railway's Chūō East Line between Shiojiri and Narai, handling both passengers and freight. It became a through station in 1910 when the line was extended toward Yabuhara, and was placed on the Chūō Main Line by the line-naming revision of 1 May 1911. Freight handling ended in 1972 and parcel handling in 1984; the station became unstaffed and a simple-consignment station on 22 March 1985. It passed to JR Central at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and the wooden station building from opening, maintained to suit the atmosphere of the post-station town, remains in use today. It is a ground-level station with a total of two platforms and three tracks — a single side platform serving one track and an island platform serving two — plus sidings and an overpass, and is a simple-consignment station managed under Kiso-Fukushima Station.

Notes

Narai sits at 933.8 m above sea level, the highest station on the JR Central network — higher even than Tokyo Skytree (634 m), a comparison the station advertises on a notice posted inside the station.
