History
Naraguchi Station opened as a freight-only station under the Railway Bureau (Tetsudo-in) on 25 June 1910; it belonged to the Kagoshima Main Line at the time. General passenger handling began on 11 March 1913, and it became a Hisatsu Line station with the line renaming of October 1927. Freight handling ended on 1 April 1973, and the station became unstaffed; JR Kyushu inherited it at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. It originally opened as a freight station for shipping out timber felled from the surrounding mountains, and traces of the old freight siding remain on the premises today. In March 2025 the JR Hisatsu Line Revival Council, made up of Kumamoto Prefecture and the municipalities along the line, agreed on a draft reconstruction plan that includes abolishing this station on grounds of declining use.
Notes
It originally opened as a freight station shipping out timber felled from the surrounding mountains, and the site of the old freight siding from that time still remains on the premises today.
