History
Nanae Station opened on 10 December 1902 as an intermediate stop in the first construction phase of the private Hokkaido Railway, which laid track from Hakodate to Hongō (today Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto). The line was nationalised on 1 July 1907, and the route was renamed the Hakodate Main Line on 12 October 1909. The station was a freight handler until 1981, when freight was withdrawn on 28 May 1981 and parcel service ended on 14 March 1985. Operations transferred to JR Hokkaido on 1 April 1987. Catenary electrification through Nanae was completed on 26 March 2016 in conjunction with the Hokkaido Shinkansen extension to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, and Kitaca IC card service began on 16 March 2024.
Notes
When a Hakodate–Nanae short-working service was introduced in October 1981, the trains ran for a time under the nickname "Local Ukiuki-gō."
