History

Naka-Oguni Station opened on 21 October 1958 as a station of Japanese National Railways' Tsugaru Line, with the opening of that line's Kanita–Mimmaya section. It became a JR East station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and when the Kaikyō Line opened on 13 March 1988, the Aomori–this station–Shin-Naka-Oguni Signal Station section was electrified (20,000 V AC, 50 Hz) and this station became, operationally, the branch point of the Kaikyō and Tsugaru lines and the boundary station between JR Hokkaido and JR East. Scheduled passenger service on the Kaikyō Line was withdrawn with the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen on 26 March 2016. Heavy-rain damage on 3 August 2022 left this station suspended as well, and it is scheduled to close on 1 April 2027 together with the abolition of the Tsugaru Line's Shin-Naka-Oguni Signal Station–Mimmaya section and the Kaikyō Line's section between this station and Shin-Naka-Oguni Signal Station.

Notes

The physical (infrastructure) boundary between JR East's Tsugaru Line and JR Hokkaido's Kaikyō Line is Shin-Naka-Oguni Signal Station, located toward the neighboring Ōdai Station, but since that signal station does not handle passengers, the section between this station and Shin-Naka-Oguni Signal Station is treated as a stretch shared by both lines, making this station the operational branch and boundary point.
