History
The Kōbu Railway's Shinjuku–Tachikawa section opened on 11 April 1889 with Nakano as one of its stations, handling both passengers and freight. The railway was nationalized in 1906, becoming part of what was later named the Chūō Main Line, and in 1929 the station moved to its present site. The Teito Rapid Transit Authority's Tōzai Line began running from Nakano on 16 March 1966, originating there as station T01; it passed to Tokyo Metro in the 2004 privatization. Today Nakano is an elevated station with four island platforms and eight tracks, served by the JR East Chūō Line (Rapid), Chūō–Sōbu Line, and Tokyo Metro Tōzai Line, the last two through-running and sharing platforms, so transfers need no intermediate gate.
Notes
Nakano Station was originally planned to open at the site of what is now Nakano-sakaue Station, and its first building stood about 100 meters west of today's station building.
