History

Nakaminato Station opened as a station on the Minato Railway on 25 December 1913. It became a station of Ibaraki Kōtsū through the wartime transport consolidation of 1 August 1944, and in 1998 was selected as one of the "Top 100 Stations of the Kantō Region" as "a station of history and tradition that retains the atmosphere of its opening period." On 1 April 2008, Ibaraki Kōtsū's Minato Line was transferred to Hitachinaka Seaside Railway, becoming a station of that company. On 3 June 2012, it entered into a sister-station partnership with Aizu Railway's Ashinomaki-Onsen Station. It is a ground-level station with a wooden station building and a single platform plus an island platform serving three tracks in total, the only station on the Minato Line staffed year-round, and an operational hub with an attached rolling-stock depot (the Minato Depot).

Notes

As the only station staffed year-round on the Minato Line, it became widely known for a black cat named "Osamu" who took up residence there in 2009; until his death in 2019, he was given his own bed marked with a "Reserved Seat" sign, and was beloved by passengers.
