History

Naka-Furano Station opened on 1 August 1900 as a general station, timed with the opening of the Hokkaido Government Railway's Tokachi Line between Kami-Furano and Shimo-Furano (present-day Furano) stations. It passed to the Railway Agency in April 1905, and the line it belonged to was renamed the Kushiro Line in October 1909 and the Furano Line in November 1913. After passing to Japanese National Railways in June 1949, freight handling ended in November 1982 and parcel handling in February 1984. Following unstaffing and simplified consignment in November 1986, JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways, and the station building was rebuilt in November 1989. In August 2006, the ticket window was closed after a batch of commuter-pass forms went missing, and after it subsequently emerged that a contracted staff member had embezzled sales proceeds, the simplified consignment was cancelled without service resuming, leaving the station fully unstaffed. It is now an unstaffed station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks, linked by a level crossing within the station grounds.

Notes

The nearby Hokusei-zan Lavender Garden is a combined facility used as a lavender field in summer and a ski slope in winter, and its town-operated aerial lift runs in both seasons.
