History
Naie Station opened on 5 July 1891 as a general station of the Hokkaido Colliery Railway; it burned down in a major fire in the town of Naie in May 1899 and reopened with a new station building in January 1902. It passed to the Government Railway when the Hokkaido Colliery Railway's lines were nationalized in October 1906, and from the 1910s onward several dedicated coal-mine lines branched off it, including those to Nippon Mining's Naie coal mine, Sumitomo's Naie mine, and Mitsui Mining's Naie dedicated railway (opened 1949, abolished 1968). Freight handling ended in October 1978 and parcel handling in February 1984; the station became unstaffed at the end of March that year and was placed under simplified consignment in May, before returning to direct JR management in 1998. It switched back to simplified consignment by a local company from May 2016, but that consignment also ended on 1 April 2022, leaving the station fully unstaffed. The "Kitaca" IC card has been usable there since 16 March 2024.
Notes
In July 2015, JR Hokkaido proposed to Naie Town that the station be made unstaffed by the end of that September, but in the face of the town's opposition, staffing was maintained until the end of April 2016; ticket sales then continued under simplified consignment to the local company Fuji Kōgyō.
