History

Nagawa Station opened on 10 September 1928 as a general station named Osaru Station, with the opening of the national railway's Osawa Line between Shizukari and Date-Monbetsu stations. On 1 April 1931 the Osawa Line was absorbed into the Muroran Main Line, and the station became part of that line. A dedicated line to Hokkaido Satetsu Kōgyō's Date Plant was used from 1957, and one to Shimura Kakō's Date Plant from 1969. On 1 October 1959, it was renamed Nagawa Station because of a reorganization of district names and a wish to avoid the sound's association with "osaru" ("monkey"). Freight and parcel handling ended on 15 May 1980, with a switch to simplified consignment; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. The station building was rebuilt in 1989.

Notes

The original name Osaru (長流) was changed in 1959 because residents disliked its phonetic resemblance to the word for 'monkey' (o-saru).
