Location

History

Nagashima Dam Station opened on 2 October 1990 on a newly built section of the Ōigawa Railway Ikawa Line, after a portion of the original route was relocated in connection with the construction of the Nagashima Dam, to keep clear of the rising waters of the lake it created. The station sits 11.4 kilometres from the line's official starting point at Senzu, in the town of Kawanehon in Shizuoka Prefecture. Between Abt Ichishiro Station and Nagashima Dam the gradient reaches 90 per mille, requiring an Abt rack-and-pinion system, and the line is electrified as far as Abt Ichishiro so that Abt-system electric locomotives can work the climb. Two opposed side platforms serve a small red-roofed unattended station building accessed by a level crossing, with a stabling siding for the Abt-system locomotives on the Senzu side.

Notes

The old tunnels of the pre-1990 route between Nagashima Dam and Abt Ichishiro have been turned into an unlit walking path nicknamed the "Mystery Tunnel", for which torches can be borrowed at the nearby visitor centre.
