History
Nagaoka Station opened on 16 June 1898 as a general station of the Hokuetsu Railway, when the Ichinokido–Nagaoka section entered service. Following nationalisation of the Hokuetsu Railway on 1 August 1907, the station was rebuilt in reinforced concrete in November 1926. After the war, the station yard was electrified in October 1947. The current building was completed on 17 April 1980; trial runs of the Jōetsu Shinkansen between Nagaoka and the Niigata rolling-stock depot began on 5 November 1980. With the opening of the full Shinkansen on 15 November 1982, Nagaoka became a stop for higher-speed services. It passed to JR East at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The station building was damaged in the 23 October 2004 Chūetsu Earthquake.
Notes
The station building stands on the site of the inner keep of Nagaoka Castle.
