History

Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station was established as the freight station "Naganohara Station" on 2 January 1945, with the opening of the Naganohara Line (now the JR East Agatsuma Line) between Shibukawa and this station. It began passenger service and became a general station on 20 April of the following year, 1946. In 1952 a freight branch line between this station and Oshi, created by transferring a Nippon Kokan dedicated line, was opened, and passenger service on that section began in 1954, but the Oshi branch was suspended in 1970 and abolished in 1971. Simultaneously with the extension from this station to Omae on 7 March 1971, the line was renamed the Agatsuma Line, and on 27 March of the same year the station was rebuilt with an overhead station building spanning the tracks. It passed to JR East with the division and privatization of the national railway on 1 April 1987, and was renamed "Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station" on 1 December 1991. Gunma Prefecture and JR East settled on a rebuilding policy as part of regional reconstruction measures related to the Yamba Dam; after construction in 2011 that made platform 1 a dead-end track, service in the new station building began on 1 August 2013. The station was incorporated into the Greater Tokyo Area network on 1 October 2014, making Suica usable, and on 26 March 2016 the regular services of the limited express "Kusatsu" (now "Kusatsu-Shima") were changed to start and terminate at this station instead of Manza-Kazawaguchi Station.

Notes

The station is both the central station of Naganohara Town and the nearest station to Kusatsu Onsen; in the 2016 timetable revision, the regular starting and ending point of the limited express "Kusatsu/Shima" was switched from Manza-Kazawaguchi Station to this station.
