History
Nagai Station opened on 15 November 1914 with the completion of the Nagai Light Railway line between Ringō and Nagai. The station building was rebuilt on 29 March 1936, and freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel handling in 1984. It passed to JR East in the National Railways' privatization and division on 1 April 1987, and became a station on the Flower Nagai Line when the Nagai Line was transferred to the Yamagata Railway on 25 October 1988. It was selected for the Tohoku 100 Selected Stations in 2002. On 1 August 2019 it moved to a temporary station building for reconstruction, and on 6 May 2021 a new station building integrated with Nagai City Hall came into service.
Notes
The Yamagata Railway's head office and engineering depot are located within the station premises, and the waiting room houses the Nagai Municipal Library's "Nagai Station Bunko" book collection.
