History

Mutsu-Tsuruda Station opened on 25 September 1918 as a station of the Mutsu Railway. Freight handling ended on 1 December 1971, and on 1 November 1986 its passing facilities were removed and it became an unstaffed station under simplified contract. It became a station of East Japan Railway Company at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and a new station building combined with the Tsuruta Town Community Plaza was completed on 26 January 1999. The seasonal rapid service "Resort Shirakami" began stopping there on 20 March 2004, and the simplified contract was ended on 13 March 2021, leaving the station unstaffed all day.

Notes

The town's name is read "Tsuruta," but the station's name is read "Tsuruda"; because there is already a station of the same written name, Tsuruta Station (read "Tsuruta Eki"), on JR East's Nikkō Line in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, this station carries the old provincial name "Mutsu" as a prefix.
