History

Mutsu-Minato Station is a station of JR East's Hachinohe Line located at Kubo, Minatomachi, Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. It opened on 11 July 1926 as a station of the Ministry of Railways. On 15 June 1928 a dedicated siding to the Hachinohe plant of Iwaki Cement (later Sumitomo Cement, now Hachinohe Cement) was completed, and the station became a shipping hub for cement to the Tōhoku region. Freight handling other than on the dedicated siding ended in 1971, and the siding itself was abolished on 1 November 1986. The station passed to JR East at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways in 1987, and staffing of the building was contracted out starting in 2006. It became unstaffed all day on 13 March 2021, and in November 2022 an izakaya, "Eki Naka Sakaba 62371◎," opened on the ground floor.

Notes

In front of the station, the Hachinohe Municipal Fish and Vegetable Retail Market, and within walking distance at Tatehana Wharf, host one of Japan's largest morning markets, and a stone statue of "Isaba no Kaccha," symbolizing the women of the fish market, stands in front of the station's north exit.
