History
Musota Station opened on 16 June 1930 as a halt on the Hanwa Electric Railway when the company extended its line from Izumi-Fuchū to Hanwa-Higashi-Wakayama (now Wakayama), in what is now Wakayama, Wakayama Prefecture. It was upgraded from a halt to a full station on 10 October 1931 with the addition of freight handling. Wartime consolidation absorbed the Hanwa Electric Railway into the Nankai Railway in December 1940, and the line was nationalised on 1 May 1944 as the Hanwa Line. Freight handling ended on 1 February 1962. With the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation, control passed to JR West, and ICOCA service began on 1 November 2003. Rapid services began calling at the station during the rush hours from 18 March 1993 and throughout the day from 10 May 1999. The station number JR-R52 was assigned in March 2018.
Notes
The name Musota — often cited among Japan's hard-to-read station names — is already documented in a record of 1174. Two separate traditions explain it: the Kii Zoku Fudoki of 1839 reports that the place was originally 墓所谷, "valley of graves", the characters replaced by the homophonous 六十谷 to avoid the inauspicious word, while an 1804 document from the local shrine instead credits the name to an arrow loosed by Empress Jingū on her return from the Three Han campaign, which is said to have fallen near the shrine.
