History
Muroran Station is the terminus of the 7.0 km Muroran Main Line branch from Higashi-Muroran. The present station dates from 1 July 1897, when the second-generation Muroran Station opened at Hotokezaka-shita, replacing the first-generation station of 1892 at Wanishi; the station building moved again in 1904 to nearby Kaigan-chō. Control passed to JR Hokkaido at the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987. On 1 October 1997 the station was rebuilt 1.1 km east, on a site close to the original Hotokezaka-shita position; the third-generation wooden building of 1912 was preserved, registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 1999 and designated a Quasi Railway Memorial in 2010. The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 30 September 2024 and the station has been unstaffed all day since 1 October 2024.
Notes
The preserved third-generation wooden Muroran Station building of 1912 became a component cultural property of the "Tantetsukō" story when that story was certified as Japan Heritage in May 2019.
