History
Mukawa Station opened on 1 October 1913 as an intermediate stop on the privately operated Tomakomai Light Railway between Tomakomai and Sarufuto (later Tomikawa). The railway was nationalised on 1 August 1927 and its line renamed the Hidaka Line, becoming the Hidaka Main Line on 1 November 1943, when the Tomiuchi Line's connecting line opened between the station and Toyoshiro and Mukawa became that line's junction. Freight handling ceased in 1977 and the station became unstaffed and simple-commission operated in 1986; control passed to JR Hokkaido on 1 April 1987. Following heavy-wave damage on 8 January 2015 between Atsuga and Ōkaribe, services on the Mukawa - Samani section were indefinitely suspended, and that 116-kilometre section was formally abolished on 1 April 2021 — making Mukawa the new terminus of the Hidaka Main Line.
Notes
Before the war, timber was floated down the Mukawa River and landed at its mouth for shipment out from the station, but in 1929 log floating came to stop at the yard at Hobetsu upstream, ending the landing of timber at the river mouth and with it the shipment of timber from Mukawa Station.
