History

Moto-Wanishi Station is a general-service station that opened on 20 August 1925 as a station of the Ministry of Railways. In October 1929, a 3 km dedicated siding was laid upon completion of the first phase of construction of Moto-Wanishi Wharf. Track-lowering work was completed in August 1938, making freight handling easier. Around December 1956, operation of the dedicated siding to the Muroran oil refinery began, and the station long served as a hub for petroleum transport within Hokkaido. It became a contracted-service station on 31 March 1984 and was unstaffed on 1 November 1986. Under the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it became a station of JR Hokkaido and JR Freight; wagonload freight handling ended on 30 May 2014, and a new station building entered service on 18 March 2015.

Notes

Until 29 May 2014, the station was Hokkaido's last railway oil-distribution hub: at peak it dispatched up to nine round-trip tank-car trains per day to nine destinations across the island.
