History

Motegi Station opened as a station of the Railway Ministry (national railway) on 15 December 1920. It subsequently functioned as a hub linking rail and bus services: the Railway Ministry-operated Joya bus line reached the station in 1934, the Joya Line was extended toward Gozenyama in 1935, and the Motegi bus line (Motegi-Utsunomiya) began serving the station in 1937. It passed to JR East with the division and privatization of the national railway on 1 April 1987, was then converted to the third-sector Mooka Railway on 11 April 1988, and is now the terminus of the Mooka Line. It is also the easternmost station in Tochigi Prefecture, and its grounds house an electrically powered turntable for the steam locomotive "SL Mooka."

Notes

It is the easternmost railway station in Tochigi Prefecture, and its grounds retain an electrically powered turntable used to turn around the active steam locomotive "SL Mōka."
