History

Momoyama Station opened as a terminus on 3 November 1895, when the Nara Railway extended its line from Fushimi Station to this station. It became a through station when the line was extended to Tamamizu Station on 25 January of the following year, 1896. It passed to Kansai Railway in an 1905 merger and to the government railway at nationalization in 1907, and was placed on the Nara Line in the line-name designation of 1909. Following the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912, expansion works were carried out to receive the state funeral train to the Fushimi-Momoyama Mausoleum, and a ticket gate for mausoleum visitors, "Goryōguchi," was used from 1928 to 1951. Freight handling was discontinued in 1984, the station passed to JR West at the privatization of Japanese National Railways in 1987, and the section between Rokujizō and JR-Fujinomori stations was double-tracked on 26 February 2023.

Notes

The station name "Momoyama" was strongly advocated to the Nara Railway at the time of opening by Chief Abbot Ōtani Kōson, who donated 500 yen among other efforts, and the name "Horiuchi," which local residents had wanted after the village of that name, was not adopted.
