History

Mitsuseki Station was established on 5 November 1923 as the Japanese National Railways' Mitsuseki signal station on the Ōu Main Line in Mitsuseki Village, Ogachi District (present-day Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture). It was upgraded to a station, opening as Mitsuseki Station, on 1 July 1930, and a private siding using a cable-car system once connected to it to carry ore from the Hōrai-Takamatsu Mine. Freight handling ended in 1962 and parcel handling ended in November 1979, after which it became an unstaffed station. It became a JR East station at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987, and in December 2017 it was rebuilt as a single-story wooden station building using Akita cedar. It is a ground-level station with a single side platform serving one track.

Notes

On 11 July 1950, the "Mitsuseki Station runaway incident" occurred, in which a freight train derailed and overturned, and a former track laborer was arrested on the 27th of the same month on a charge of obstructing traffic.
