History
Mitsu Station opened on 28 October 1888, and it was the terminus when the Iyo Railway was first established. Together with Furumachi and Matsuyamashi stations, it was one of the first railway stations opened in Shikoku, opening earlier than the stations at Marugame, Tadotsu, Zentsūji, and Kotohira, which are often described as 'Shikoku's first stations.' Track layout within the station was improved when the section between this station and Yamanishi Station was re-doubled on 16 July 1964. Work to rebuild the station building into its third generation began in 2008, and the new building was completed on 5 February 2009. Its station number is IY04, and together with Kinuyama and Furumachi stations it is designated a transportation hub on the Takahama Line.
Notes
In Natsume Sōseki's novel 'Botchan,' the protagonist, upon arriving in Shikoku, is described as boarding from this station (Mitsu stop) what he called a 'train like a matchbox' — the train that later became known as the 'Botchan Train.'
