History

Misawa Station opened on 1 April 1894 as Furumaki Station on the Nippon Railway. It joined the Tōhoku Main Line under the Japanese Government Railways when Nippon Railway was nationalised on 1 July 1906. The Towada Railway opened its own Furumaki station on 4 September 1922, the two becoming a joint station. JNR's Furumaki was renamed Misawa on 20 March 1961, following Towada's similar rename on 1 March 1961. A bridge-over-track station building entered service in stages in March 1987, and the JNR portion passed to JR East at privatisation on 1 April 1987. The Hachinohe–Aomori section of the Tōhoku Main Line, including Misawa, transferred to the Aoimori Railway on 4 December 2010, and the Towada Kankō Electric Railway closed its railway line on 1 April 2012.

Notes

When the new bridge-over-track station building came into full use on 27 March 1987, the west (main) and east exits were connected inside the station for the first time since it opened in 1894.
