History
Misaki Station traces its history to 1 August 1892, when the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company placed a freight station at Etosukereppu at the same time as it opened its original Muroran terminus at Wanishi. The freight station was formally opened as Misaki Station on 21 June 1905, handling freight only at first. Nationalisation followed on 1 October 1906. The Japan Steel Works private railway began running from here to its factory, a distance of 10.5 km, on 4 October 1912, and a new building with a passenger platform opened on 1 June 1922. Freight handling ended on 1 November 1986, when the station also became unstaffed, and JR Hokkaido inherited it at the 1987 privatisation. The simple commission held by a shop in front of the station lapsed when the shop closed on 1 April 2017, leaving the station fully unstaffed.
Notes
A monument inscribed "Birthplace of the Muroran Line", erected in the station grounds on 1 August 1958, commemorates the station's proximity to the Etochikereppu Cape jetty that served as the line's original planned starting point; when the station was staffed, it even had a matching commemorative ink stamp.
