History
Minatoyama Station opened on 21 September 1898 on the Iyo Railway as a freight station handling salt shipped out from the Shinhama salt fields. The salt fields of Shinhama village were abolished in the salt-field consolidation of the Meiji 40s (1907–1916), and the station was closed for a time on 1 July 1907. It reopened as a passenger station on 1 May 1931 and has operated as such ever since. It became unstaffed on 28 March 2015. Its station number is IY03, and a freight line called the Horikawa branch line once extended from this station (the date of its abolition is unknown). Because the surrounding area has little flat land, ridership is low.
Notes
In the 1998 film 'Ganbatte Ikimasshoi,' this station appears as the nearest station to a rowing boathouse, and the nearby Baishinji Beach around the station serves as a setting.
