History

Minamikata Station opened on 8 May 1963 as an unstaffed, passengers-only station on the Japanese National Railways Nichinan Line. In March 1978 the platform was extended by 20 meters, giving it a usable length of 90 meters. It was inherited by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. On 1 April 2022, under a JR Kyushu organizational reorganization, jurisdiction was transferred from the Kagoshima Branch to the newly established Miyazaki Branch. The "SUGOCA" IC card is scheduled to become usable from 17 January 2026, and the station has continued to operate unstaffed throughout, since it opened.

Notes

Before the Miyazaki Airport Line opened, this station was the nearest station to Miyazaki Airport, but even then it saw almost no use for airport access, so the opening of the Miyazaki Airport Line had no effect on its passenger numbers.
