History

Minami-Kariyasu Station opened on 6 May 1928 as "Kariyasu Station," with the Ministry of Railways' Etsumi-Nan Line extension from Mino-Shimokawa Station (now Ōya Station) to Fukado Station, and began handling passengers and freight. Freight handling was discontinued on 1 October 1974. The station became unstaffed on 1 April 1985, and in June of the same year it became a simplified-consignment station. On 11 December 1986, when the Etsumi-Nan Line was converted to the third-sector Nagaragawa Railway, the station became one of that company's stations and was simultaneously renamed "Minami-Kariyasu Station." It is an unusual case of a station name becoming longer at the time of a third-sector conversion.

Notes

Before Gujō became a city, the station was the central station of Minami Village, Gujō District, and the station name, lengthened by the addition of the village name, is considered an unusual case at the time of the conversion. In front of the station, the "Nihon Man-Mannaka Center" ("Center of Japan") houses one of the world's largest sundials.
