History

Mikuni Station opened on 15 December 1911 as a general station on the government-built Mikuni Line in what is now Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. The line was extended to the coast on 1 January 1913 with a goods-handling point at Mikuni-Minato treated as part of Mikuni Station, and that point became a separate freight station on 1 July 1914. Year-round passenger service between the two began on 15 December 1927. The Mikuni Awara Electric Railway opened Mikunichō Station opposite on 31 January 1929, renaming it Densha-Mikuni Station on 10 February 1929; the two operations were consolidated when the Mikuni Line was suspended as a government railway on 11 October 1944 and Keifuku Electric Railway took over the section between Mikuni and Mikuni-Minato under 600 V DC electrification. JNR's Mikuni Line was formally abolished on 1 March 1972. The station moved into the newly completed Keifuku Mikuni Building on 1 July 1982. It closed on 24 June 2001 after the Echizen Main Line accident and reopened on 10 August 2003 as an Echizen Railway station. A new wooden station building of approximately 484 m² entered service on 27 March 2018.

Notes

The new 2018 station building is a single-storey timber structure with partial reinforced-concrete sections, covering about 484 m² and housing the station office, a waiting room, a tourist information centre, a regional tourism information room and tenant retail space. Its replacement was decided on as part of the urban-renewal improvement plan for the area around Mikuni Station.
