History

Midori Station opened on 20 September 1931 as a general station of the national railway named Kami-Sattsuru Station. A reorganization of town and district names carried out ahead of Kami-Shari Village's incorporation as a town and renaming to Kiyosato in August 1955 placed the station in "Midori-cho," and the station was accordingly renamed Midori Station on 10 April 1956. The Kami-Sattsuru Forest Railway opened in 1938 and reached as much as 21.1 km at its greatest extent (in 1950) before being abolished in 1955. Freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel handling in 1984; staffing ended in 1986; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. A ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Senmo Main Line's full opening was held at the station in 2001, and management of the station was transferred to Kiyosato Town on 1 April 2025.

Notes

The name "Midori" ("green") reportedly reflects not only the location becoming "Midori-chō" but also that the area is "a quiet place surrounded by green on all sides" and that "the fresh greenery of spring and summer there is truly splendid."
