History

Mena Station opened on 15 October 1904 as a general station named Isoya Station, with the Hokkaido Railway's extension between Utasutsu Station (present-day Neppu Station) and Kozawa Station. It was renamed Mena Station on 15 December 1905, and after nationalization on 1 July 1907 it became a station on the Hakodate Main Line on 12 October 1909. Freight handling ended in 1974, and parcel handling ended on 1 March 1982 with a switch to simplified consignment; the passing-track facilities were abolished on 1 November 1986, making operations unstaffed, and the station became fully unstaffed on 1 April 1992. However, when the 2000 eruption of Mount Usu suspended the Muroran Main Line and this station's line served as a detour route, capacity proved insufficient, so passing-track facilities were reinstalled in 2000 to increase capacity for disaster transport.

Notes

After its passing loop was removed in 1986, Mena had it reinstalled in 2000 specifically to bolster the Hakodate Main Line as a detour route when Mount Usu's eruption shut the parallel Muroran Main Line.
