History
Matsuyama City Station is a station in Minatomachi 5-chōme, Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, served by the Iyotetsu Takahama, Yokogawara, and Gunchū lines and by the city Hanazono Line. Its suburban-line station number is IY10, and its city tram (Hanazono Line) number is 01. It opened on 28 October 1888 as Matsuyama Station, one of Shikoku's first railway stations. It was renamed Togawa Station on 20 July 1889. On 1 May 1900, Iyotetsu merged with the Nan'yo Railway and folded Fujiwara Station into Togawa Station, and on 1 June 1902 it was renamed back to Matsuyama Station. On 1 March 1927, it was renamed Matsuyama City Station with the opening of Japanese National Railways' Matsuyama Station on the San'yo Line (now the Yosan Line). On 25 March 1947, the city Hanazono Line's Matsuyamashi-ekimae stop opened, and in 2008 the Hanazono Line stop was renamed Matsuyamashi-eki Station. New city tram platforms came into use on 24 August 2025, and a plaza for events and gatherings is scheduled for completion around autumn 2026.
Notes
Matsuyama City Station has the highest passenger traffic of any station in Shikoku (an average of 27,416 boardings and alightings per day in fiscal 2017), the most of any railway station in Shikoku, JR Shikoku included. Locally it is called by the shortened name "Shieki" to distinguish it from JR Shikoku's Matsuyama Station, and this abbreviation also appears on road signs. It was the first station in Shikoku to install automatic ticket gates, but on 16 February 2014 these were removed and replaced with simplified gates as the IC "i-card" became widespread.
