History
Mataki Station opened on 26 July 1925 as a general station on the Ōfunato Line in what is now Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1961 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, with the station made unattended on 1 November 1986. It transferred to JR East at the 1 April 1987 privatisation of the Japanese National Railways, and the present waiting room came into use in January 1998. The station has two opposed side platforms linked by an in-station level crossing and a comparatively spacious waiting room. It is managed remotely from Ichinoseki Station.
