History
Makuhari Station opened on 9 December 1894 as a station of the Sōbu Railway handling both passengers and freight. It was nationalised under the Railway Nationalisation Act on 1 September 1907, becoming a station of the Imperial Railway Agency. Parcel delivery handling ended on 1 October 1969, freight handling on 1 November 1973, and remaining parcel handling on 1 July 1978. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. Automatic ticket gates entered service on 15 May 1993, departure melodies were introduced on 26 November 1998, and Suica acceptance began on 18 November 2001. The new north-exit plaza opened on 1 August 2023, and smart platform doors entered service on platforms 1 and 4 on 26 September 2025.
Notes
Between Makuhari Station and the neighboring Makuhari-Hongō Station lies "Hanatate Crossing," the only level crossing between Tokyo Station and Chiba Station, and the project to grade-separate it has been suspended for a long time.
