History
Makubetsu Station opened on 21 October 1905 as the national railway's Yamuwakka Station. Use of a dedicated line to Nitta Taikaku's Tokachi tannin factory began in 1911, and in 1954 the imperial train carrying Emperor Shōwa stopped there en route from Kushiro City to Obihiro City. The station was renamed Makubetsu Station on 1 November 1963; because this duplicated the name of another Makubetsu station on the Tenpoku Line, that station was first renamed Keihoku Station on 1 October of the same year before this station's name was changed. Freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel handling in 1985; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. It is now a station operated under contract by Hokkaido JR Service Net, with a staffed ticket counter (Midori no Madoguchi).
Notes
The station was renamed from Yamuwakka to Makubetsu on 1 November 1963, a month after the other Makubetsu Station, on the Tenpoku Line in Wakkanai, was renamed Keihoku on 1 October 1963 — a change that removed the naming conflict and brought the station's name into line with the surrounding town.
