History
Kyūsendō Station opened on 21 December 1942 as the Ministry of Railways' Ōsakama provisional stop. It was upgraded to Ōsakama Station and staffed on 1 March 1947, placed under contracted operation from 1962, and, after freight handling ended in October that year and baggage handling ended in 1984, became unstaffed. It was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and renamed "Kyūsendō Station" on 13 March the following year, 1988. The new name comes from the limestone cave "Kyūsendō," about 1.2 km northeast of the station, and around the time of the renaming the station also became a stop for express and limited express trains. In the July 2020 torrential rains the platform was washed away and the station building half-destroyed; from February 2024, work to demolish and remove the station building, judged at risk of collapse, was carried out. It is located at Isshōchi, Kuma-mura, Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Notes
The station's name was changed from "Ōsakama Station" in 1988 in reference to the limestone cave "Kyūsendō," about 1.2 km to the northeast, and visitors who contact the cave can receive free transport between it and the station.
