History
Kushiro-Shitsugen Station opened on 23 July 1988 as a JR Hokkaido temporary station on the Senmō Main Line, set up to coincide with the designation of the surrounding Kushiro-shitsugen National Park the previous year. It originally ran only in summer and autumn and replaced a brief two-day predecessor named Yanchabōzu-mura that operated on 8 August 1987 and 09 for an event marking the park designation. The stop was upgraded to a permanent station on 1 December 1996. Its larch log-cabin building, opened with the station, has a roof shaped to resemble a red-crowned crane in flight; original opening forecasts of 200 daily users were not met.
Notes
The station roof imitates a red-crowned crane with its wings spread, and the building beneath it is a larch log cabin that opened together with the station; Kushiro-shitsugen National Park begins immediately outside.
