History
The first Kushiro Station opened on 20 July 1901 as the terminus of the Hokkaidō Kansetsu Tetsudō between Kushiro and Shiranuka, with a locomotive shed alongside. Operation passed to the government on 1 April 1905. When the line was extended east to Hama-Akkeshi on 1 December 1917 the passenger station was moved to its present site and the original building became Hama-Kushiro freight-only station. The Senmō Main Line began operating from Kushiro on 15 September 1927. The current four-storey "people's station" building was completed on 1 August 1961. JR Hokkaido and JR Freight inherited the stop on 1 April 1987; freight operations were withdrawn on 1 April 2006.
Notes
Kushiro's departure-display board is the easternmost LED-type passenger-information display in Japan, and the station itself is the easternmost stop on a regularly scheduled limited-express service.
