History
Kusatsu Station opened on 22 August 1922 as Kusatsu-machi Station, when Hiroshima Gas Electric Railway (the predecessor of the present-day Hiroden network) opened its line from Koi-machi to this point, a historic port town. The town's fish market had long supplied Hiroshima with seafood, creating early demand for rail transport. The line was extended to Hatsukaichi-machi on 6 April 1924. The station was renamed Kusatsu at an uncertain date, thought to be around 1952-1954, and its original building was destroyed by fire on 17 February 1971. Today it is a ground-level station with two platforms and two tracks joined by a passage, serving as stop M22 on the Hiroden Miyajima Line between Furue and Kusatsu-minami.
Notes
The station once had a low-floor siding platform, used for boarding through-running city-tram cars, whose floor sloped where it met the high-floor main-line platform.
