History

Kusami Station began life on 1 May 1952 as Kusami Signal Station on the Nippō Main Line and was upgraded to a full passenger station on 1 June 1952. Double-tracking northward reached the station in 1963 and southward in 1965, and electrification of the Kokura to Shindenbaru section followed on 1 October 1966. Control passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987. The current second-generation station building was completed on 20 December 2005, and the opening of the new Kitakyushu Airport on 16 March 2006 turned the station into the airport's primary rail access point, with a shuttle bus service inaugurated the same day.

Notes

From 1 April 2025 selected Sonic and Nichirin Seagaia limited-express trains — five round trips in all — began stopping at Kusami to improve connections with Kitakyushu Airport.
