History

Kuromatsunai Station opened on 3 November 1903 as a general station of the private Hokkaido Railway when the Mori–Neppu section was completed; a locomotive shed was set up at the same time. After the railway's nationalisation in July 1907, the line became part of the Hakodate Main Line in October 1909. From 24 October 1920 to 1968 the station was the junction with the private Suttsu Railway, which was formally retired on 11 May 1972. The building was rebuilt in January 1980. Freight handling ended on 1 March 1982, parcels on 14 March 1985. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at the 1987 privatisation. The Kuromatsunai stationmaster post was abolished on 1 April 2002 and merged into Oshamambe, and the station was fully unstaffed from 1 April 2007.

Notes

After the Hokkaido Shinkansen is extended to Sapporo, Kuromatsunai Station is expected to be permanently closed.
