History

Kuroishi opened on the Kumamoto Electric Railway Kikuchi Line on 27 August 1913. It was originally a staffed stop with turnback workings and overnight stabling of rolling stock; the stabling ended in 1987, and on 1 February 1988 the introduction of electronic-coded automatic block signalling allowed the station to be unstaffed, the turnback workings ending at the same time. Ticket sales continued under contract to Kumamoto Dentetsu Kankō until 25 February 2001. On that date the station was relocated to a new alignment built as part of the National Route 387 improvement project, and the stop became fully unstaffed. The Kumamon IC Card was accepted from 1 April 2015, and the station was assigned number KD16 on 1 October 2019. A timetable revision in February 2025 reduced service frequency and ended mid-day train crossings.

Notes

Although Kuroishi has been an unstaffed through-station for decades, platform 1, which serves trains towards Miyoshi, still has a departure signal at its Kita-Kumamoto end, so emergency turnback workings towards Kita-Kumamoto remain possible.
