History

Kurobedaira Station is a cable-car and ropeway station of Tateyama Kurobe Kankō, sitting at 1,828 metres above sea level in Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture. Construction began on 2 November 1965, and the station opened on 20 July 1969 as Kurobe-Gozen Station on the Kurobe Cable Car. The Tateyama Ropeway opened on 25 July 1970, and the station was renamed Kurobedaira in the same year. Improvement works finished on 25 April 1978 and a full rebuild of the station building on 24 April 1992. Designed by Takamasa Yoshizaka in reinforced concrete over three floors and a basement, it forms part of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Foldable platform doors were installed in 2018, a first for any cable-car station in Japan.

Notes

At 1,828 metres above sea level, Kurobedaira is the highest station in Japan among cable cars and lines licensed under the Railway Business Act, aerial ropeways excluded. From 1996 to 2024, however, the Tateyama Tunnel trolleybus was treated as a railway line, so that distinction belonged instead to its Murodō Station, at 2,450 metres.
