History
Kunebetsu Station opened on 15 September 1913 as a station on the Japanese Government Railways' Kamiiso Light Railway Line, which was renamed the Kamiiso Line in 1922 and the Esashi Line in 1936. Freight handling ended in 1961, and the station building was rebuilt in 1979 and again in 1991. The station passed from Japanese National Railways to JR Hokkaido on 1 April 1987 at privatisation, and the Goryōkaku–Kikonai section was electrified in 1988 alongside the opening of the Kaikyō Line through the Seikan Tunnel. On 26 March 2016 that section was separated from JR Hokkaido, and the unstaffed station became part of the South Hokkaido Railway Line, operated by the South Hokkaido Railway Company (Dōnan Isaribi Railway).
Notes
It is the northernmost station operated by a Japanese third-sector railway company.
