History

Koyanagi Station opened on 1 November 1986 as an unstaffed station on the Japanese National Railways' Tōhoku Main Line, inaugurated the same day as Shin-Aomori on the Ōu Main Line and Yadamae on the Tōhoku Main Line. With the JNR split on 1 April 1987 it came under JR East. On 4 December 2010 the Tōhoku Shinkansen extension to Shin-Aomori transferred the surrounding section to the Aoimori Railway Company. The station has two opposed side platforms linked by a pedestrian underpass on the east side rather than a footbridge, and is managed by Aomori Station; staff from Asamushi-Onsen Station deploy here during weekday morning rush hours.

Notes

Daily use nearly doubled in fiscal 2017 after Aomori Commercial High School relocated to the station's vicinity: against a daily average of 295 boardings in fiscal 2016, fiscal 2017 recorded a daily average of 1,063 boardings and alightings.
