History

Kotoni Station (T03) is an underground Sapporo Municipal Subway station on the Tōzai Line, in Nishi-ku, Sapporo. It opened on 10 June 1976 as the line's terminus, when the Tōzai Line began service between here and Shiroishi Station; during construction the site carried the provisional name "Kotoni-hondōri." On 25 February 1999 the line was extended to Miyanosawa Station, making Kotoni an intermediate stop. A concourse sits above a single island platform serving two tracks, and platform screen doors were added in 2009. The station connects to a bus terminal, beneath which an underground multipurpose hall, "Pathos," has operated since 1993. Today it lies about 800 m from JR Hokkaido's separate Kotoni Station on the Hakodate Main Line.

Notes

Unlike Sapporo Station and Shin-Sapporo Station, whose subway names are written in hiragana to avoid confusion with the adjacent JR stations sharing their kanji, Kotoni Station keeps the same kanji as JR Hokkaido's separate Kotoni Station nearby, since the roughly 800 m gap between them makes mix-ups unlikely.
