History

Kōriyama Station opened on 16 July 1887 with the inauguration of Nippon Railway service between Kōriyama and Kuroiso, and the line was extended north to Sendai and Shiogama on 15 December 1887. Services on what became the Banetsu West Line began on 26 July 1898. Nippon Railway was nationalised in 1906 and the station building was rebuilt several times — in 1900, 1913, 1951 and 1980. Tōhoku Shinkansen services began on 23 June 1982. JR East and JR Freight took over at JNR privatisation in 1987. The station is a major junction for the Tōhoku Main Line, Banetsu West Line, Banetsu East Line and Suigun Line.

Notes

Both departure melodies used at the station — "Tobira" on conventional platforms and "Kiseki" on Shinkansen platforms — were composed by the band Greeeen, who originated in Kōriyama.
