History
Kitsuki Station opened on 22 March 1911 with the opening of the Hōshū Line's Nakayamaga–Hiji section. On 7 July 1922 the Kunisaki Railway's section from this station to Kitsuki-machi opened, making it a connecting station, but Kunisaki Railway merged into Ōita Kōtsū in 1945, becoming the Kunisaki Line, which was completely abolished on 1 April 1966. Double-tracking between Ōkawashi Signal Station and this station was completed in 1978; freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel handling in 1986. It became a JR Kyushu/JR Freight station at the 1987 JNR privatization; in 1995 the wall on the station-building side of platform 1 was renovated in samurai-residence style, and the IC card "SUGOCA" became usable there on 1 December 2012. It is also a stop for the limited express "Nichirin."
Notes
The ticket gate has a wooden gate styled after a barrier checkpoint, in keeping with the castle town of Kitsuki, and since August 2021 the arrival melody has been "Okaeri no Uta" ("Welcome-Home Song"), composed by locally born singer-songwriter Kōsetsu Minami.
