History

Kita-Sanjō Station opened on 10 April 1925 with the new construction of the Echigo Railway section between Tsubame and Ichinokido stations. On 1 October 1927 the Echigo Railway was nationalized and transferred to the National Railways' Yahiko Line, and in 1962 the station building was rebuilt into its second generation. Freight handling ended on 27 March 1969 and parcel handling on 14 March 1985. Electrification opened on 8 April 1984, at which time the passing-track facilities were abolished. It passed to JR East in the National Railways' privatization and division on 1 April 1987. On 15 September 1997, with the elevation of the Yahiko Line between Tsubame-Sanjō and Higashi-Sanjō, the station was rebuilt into its third-generation building, and an elevated-line opening ceremony was held the following day, the 16th. Use of Suica became possible on 15 March 2008, and the station became unstaffed at all hours on 15 March 2025.

Notes

The elevation project completed in 1997 cost approximately 12 billion yen; of the 2.72 kilometers between Aramachi 1-chōme and Higashi-Sanjō 1-chōme, about 2.1 kilometers were elevated, and of 17 level crossings, 15 were grade-separated and 2 were abolished.
